The Moment You're Not In

You’re here, but you’re not. Your body is in the room and your mind is three steps ahead or somewhere behind — planning, replaying, checking. The moment happens without you in it.

The mind lives in other times

Most of our attention is spent in the future or the past. We rehearse what’s coming and revisit what’s gone, and the actual present — the only place anything real happens — slips by unnoticed.

This isn’t a character flaw; it’s the mind’s default. But lived on autopilot, days blur together, and later you can’t find them. The ordinary day is the thing itself, not a rehearsal for a better one arriving later.

Presence is attention, returned

Being present isn’t a mystical state. It’s just attention placed on what’s actually in front of you, brought back each time it wanders — which it will, again and again.

You don’t achieve it once; you practise it. One of the biggest thieves of presence is the reflex to reach for the phone the moment a gap opens, pulling you out of the room and into everywhere else.

The one action

Choose one routine moment today — washing up, walking, listening to someone — and give it your whole attention. When your mind leaves, bring it back, without judgement. Just that one moment, fully.

That’s enough for today.
